University of Illinois ADAPTHAUS becoming Reality
Spotlight
Jan 29, 2021

Rendering of ADAPTHAUS in Champaign Illinois.

The University of Illinois’ ADAPTHAUS, under construction in Champaign Illinois, is a house that can adapt:

• To a changing climate of increasingly high temperatures and carbon dioxide with CERV2-controlled 1 ton Mitsubishi ducted minisplit heat pump

• To a world changed by pandemic because the CERV2 automatically manages contagion concentrations. The CERV2 is a pandemic defense technology that makes indoor environments microbe inhibitors rather than contagion incubators

• To an increasing elderly population who would like to age-in-place, and whose more delicate health is directly related to comfort and air quality

Build Equinox continues to support and encourage Solar Decathlon teams, from Ben and Ty’s participation in the 2007 Solar Decathlon as members of the University of Illinois “Element House” team to the “Inter House”, winner of the 2019 Solar Decathlon Africa competition.

ADAPTHAUS under construction as of January 27, 2021 by Darcy Bean Construction, an experience Passive House builder.

The current Solar Decathlon is different from previous competitions. ADAPTHAUS is a full-sized, real house rather than a small module. ADAPTHAUS will be donated to Habitat for Humanity after the April 2021 competition. Past Solar Decathlons have been based on small, transportable homes that restricted house size and required significant funding for logistics.

The ADAPTHAUS team will display several of Build Equinox’s technology leading features, including: integrated CERV2/ducted minisplit with CERV-IR (CERV-Intelligent Relay) for unified, smart phone controlled IAQ and comfort; an array of our battery-free wireless occupancy sensors, wall switches and window/door sensors; integrated UVGI (CERV-UV); and maybe a few surprises.

We will bring you updates as construction continues followed by competition updates.

Good luck to ALL SD Teams! You inspire us to do better, and your efforts are bringing us closer to a sustainable future.
