ASHRAE Standard 241, “Control of Infectious Aerosols”, a groundbreaking ventilation standard was approved on June 24, 2023. The standard is ostensibly intended for times when elevated risk of disease transmission is identified by Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), triggering an “Infection Risk Management Mode,” or IRMM.
Standard 241 is a first step toward a ventilation practice that should and will become standard ventilation practice. Infectious microbes are always in the air, and continuous mitigation through dilution, filtration and sanitization should always be in place.
It is a myth that enhanced ventilation is energy inefficient and expensive. Your health is worth more than the 2 cents per hour required to have truly healthy indoor air. Our article on Brixham Montessori Friends School describes a school that invested in upgrading their school buildings air quality while converting to sustainable heat pumps with the end result of saving health cost and utility bills!
