Our friends at Greenshell in Northbrook (a suburb of Chicago) have completed another fantastic example of a low-energy “passive” home with the newest building technologies (including the CERV2)! Check out the highlights and photos below:
Minimal Air Infiltration
Incredible attention to the building shell to keep it GREEN. Absolute minimum leakages of air into and out of the home. (Aero Seal with Blower door seals all openings in house-Video (Link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/PvtRN2rQEScMn7D67 )
Passive Thermal Comfort
High R-Value insulation used for the shell of the home, including R80 blown cellulose in the attic, R40 blown cellulose in the walls, and R21 Basement wall insulation.
Windows
Triple pane European-style windows of the shell with tight infiltration by using three-point locking points and double gasketing in a triple-glazed window. (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-hwYS1_KtY)
HVAC
The home features Mitsubishi/Trane Heat Pumps for heating and cooling of the shell, connected to the CERV2 Indoor Air Quality Management System (Link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/n948bJfDgxXrF5gaA)
Foundation
In this house, Greenshell utilized a precast foundation, as they have for all their projects for the last 15 years. This foundation was placed in one day for the main Basement Structure - The GreenShell home was erected over the Basement level walls and roofed in. Then in one day, the Garage Prefab Foundation was installed. This foundation is made in Michigan and has a proprietary locking and connection detail that makes it waterproof and airtight contributing to the GREENSHELL. Solar Ready
Solar panels have not been installed yet, but the home is designed to accommodate enough solar to provide all the energy needed for the home, including charging an electric vehicle!
