Apr 1, 2010: Metal Roof

No April Fool’s, the metal roof installation has begun!

But first, below are pictures of the house showing the overhang shadow moving down the clerestory windows.

Updated solar production chart below. We have produced 1200kWh since Feb. Only 15kWh has been used. The gap in data can be attributed to Ty’s Spring break last week. He was not totally without thinking about the house though as he gave a presentation about Equinox at Oklahoma State University and also he and Deb by chance found a kitchen designer they liked in Tulsa.

Here are some pictures of the metal roof installation. It’s fairly windy, so the hardest part is transporting the long panels up onto the roof. It is a hidden fastener metal roof system. One side of the panel snaps into place and the other side is screwed down. The next panel then snaps over the fasteners, thus hidden fastener and then the other side screwed.

The metal panels came in wooden crates precut to length according to the specified roof dimensions. Each panel spans the whole length of the roof. We chose a white roof to reflect the sun, keeping the roof cooler, but they come in basically any color you want.

A ramp was built to slide the panels onto the roof. The ones on the garage are the longest and most difficult to maneuver. Once lined up and square the one side is snapped onto the previously installed panel and the other side screwed down to the roof. With the high winds today just the first section of roof over the garage was completed. Hopefully tomorrow will be calmer.

So why a metal roof? Why not? Asphalt shingles are simply a cheap roof covering developed to make use of low grade petroleum. There’s no benefit to using them, unless you like products that don’t last as long and fill up landfills. When we have cost information I’ll post that as well.

Metal roofing:

  • lasts longer (50 year warranty)
  • is lighter weight
  • higher wind resistance
  • fireproof
  • fully recyclable
  • saves energy (keeps roof cooler)
  • sheds water and snow faster
