Mar 22, 2010: Vernal Equinox

March 20 was the Vernal Equinox. The sun passes directly over the equator on the equinox providing the same amount of daylight as nighttime. It is around this date that the roof overhangs have been designed on the Equinox House to begin shading the clerestory windows from direct sunlight. This reduces the heating load on the house during the summer months.

In these pictures you can see the overhang shadow is at the top of the windows. Over the course of the next few weeks that shadow will move down over the window until the sun is high enough that direct light is completely cut out from entering the house.

This will continue until the fall equinox when the shadow will move above the windows to again allow direct light into the house when the additional heat is beneficial.

The metal roof has been put on order and should be here in a week or two. Selections are being made on the siding and trim colors and an order will be placed when that is decided. On the interior, drywall installation is being arranged. Hopefully things continue to go smoothly as we hope to be finished in the next 2-3 months.
