ADAPTHAUS

The ADAPTHAUS project emerges as a beacon of hope for first-time homeowners seeking affordable yet adaptable housing solutions. Inspired by the pressing need for accessible living options, this innovative initiative aims to redefine the housing market landscape. At its core, ADAPTHAUS prioritizes both affordability and adaptability, two pillars crucial for addressing the challenges faced by aspiring homeowners in today’s market.

The University of Illinois team’s involvement in the Solar Decathlon underscores their dedication to sustainable innovation and collaborative problem-solving. With a rich history of participation in the competition, the team brings together students and faculty from diverse disciplines, including architecture, engineering, environmental science, and business. Through their collective expertise and ingenuity, they have developed a home that not only meets the rigorous standards of the Solar Decathlon but also addresses real-world housing challenges.

Central to the ADAPTHAUS concept is its commitment to affordability without compromising on quality or sustainability. By leveraging efficient construction methods and utilizing cost-effective materials, the project endeavors to make homeownership a reality for a wider demographic. The house features modular components and customizable floor plans, empowering occupants to tailor their living space to their evolving needs and lifestyles. Whether it’s accommodating a growing family or creating a home office, the flexibility of the design ensures that the house can grow and adapt alongside its occupants, fostering long-term sustainability and satisfaction.

ADAPTHAUS boasts a range of technical features aimed at maximizing energy efficiency and enhancing occupant comfort. The home incorporates advanced insulation and thermal mass techniques to regulate indoor temperatures effectively with the help of a 1-ton low-temperature heat pump connected in-line with the CERV2, ensuring a healthy and comfortable living environment. Smart home technologies further augment the house’s functionality, enabling occupants to remotely control various aspects such as lighting, temperature, and security.

ADAPTHAUS won 1st place in the Comfort and Environmental Quality category, and fourth place overall in the 2021 U.S. Solar Decathlon Build Challenge!
